Anyone who studied chemical engineering could be referred to as a chemists as well as an engineer. Chemical engineers take part in almost everything that has to do with production, so you could say that they are everywhere. This branch of engineering is a varied field, covering areas like biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology and biotechnology. Chemical engineers have the knowledge to work in the following areas:

Biochemical engineering

Biochemical engineering plays a key role in biomedical challenges in the world today. An example is in the preparation of vaccines and in the construction of tissue-enginehered replacements. They are vital to new medicines, but in the near future, they will be seen in more areas of life which may include dealing with environmental pollution.

Biomedical engineering

Biomedical engineering involves combining and applying the principles of engineering to biology and medicine. It integrated aspects of chemical engineering into human biology to improve human health at all levels. It is responsible for the development of a number of life-enhancing and life-saving technologies like the prosthetics and implanted devices, such as insulin pumps, pacemakers and artificial organs.


Biotechnology has a stronger base in biology and the use of biological processes of microorganisms in the production of useful food products have been around for more than 6,000 years. Biotechnology is responsible for that, because it harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to produce these food products and other breakthrough products and technologies used in fighting rare diseases.


Nanotechnology refers to the use of nanoscale to build, produce and apply materials, structures, devices and systems. Nanotechnology is helping to clean the environment, and solve major health problems.

Materials Science

Nanoscience is increasingly gaining media attention and this has shot materials science to the forefront at many universities. Material science is concerned with the applications of the properties of matter to various areas of science and engineering.
